Eleven years later—meow!

Way back on July 14th, 2014, cat loving friends and I packed up 40 rescued cats and moved out to the beach in Teluk Bahang. That was the start of Cat Beach Sanctuary — it has come sooo far since then! It's people who make the difference for cats. That’s why I ask for your help to reach more Cat Lovers to ensure Cat Beach is here to stay for many years to come.

Every cat lover knows how it goes: you rescue one cat, then you notice another in need…and another…and before you know it, caring for cats has become a full-time mission. Sadly, there’s no end to the number of cats who need help. That’s why we launched the Cat Beach Helpline, expanded our social media outreach, and started the Cat Beach (Daily) Mews Channel on WhatsApp—to help find other safe options for cats in need.

Eleven years have flown by. If you’d told me back in 2014 that more than a decade later I’d still be doing everything I could think of to help care for over 300 rescued cats and kittens, I’m not sure I’d have believed you!

The sanctuary has come such a long way from the days when it was a sadly run-down beach bungalow surrounded by rusty ruins. There have been many repairs, renovations, and yearly fresh paint to do the best we can to keep things safe and welcoming for the cats and the people who care about them. Last fall, when a big storm tore the roof off, it was a vivid reminder that there’s always more to be done.

Looking ahead, we have big plans to improve the facilities and make Cat Beach more comfortable for both cats and visitors. Our VAX & SNIP program (vaccination and spaying/neutering) is already in full swing—since January, we’ve done over 150 vaccinations and 60 surgeries! We’re also growing our online community and charity shop sales to support the cause. Connecting with more cat lovers, near and far, is a top priority.

"Scaling up" is only possible because our community of supporters keeps growing. University students, corporate teams, and volunteers have given their time to clean, renovate, and enrich the lives of our cats. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects have been a huge help! We can always use more hands-on-deck in purrson or online - please let us know if you can find some time or know of a way to help cats!

Right now, we’re at (or even over) our “capacity for care.” While we hate turning any cat away, sometimes we simply have no choice.

But when it’s life or death—when tiny kittens are found abandoned or injured cats are left behind—we know we must do everything we can to help rescue them. We know we need more people - rescuers, transporters, staff and foster carers, in-person volunteers, online supporters, donors. Because it takes all of us to stand up for cats who have no one else.

At Cat Beach, we want everyone—visitors, volunteers, supporters— to experience the joys of cats. To see why these amazing animals have been humans' companions for centuries. Education and training are key, because people create the miracles that save cats’ lives.

And let’s not forget—cats help us humans, too. Studies show spending just 20 minutes with a cat can lower stress, improve health, and even protect against stroke or heart attack. Plus, cats are wonderful companions and expert rodent deterrents.

And it's time to to look toward the future, could YOU join us to help cats?We can see so many ways to grow and sustain this unique sanctuary. All it takes is People Power. The biggest challenge? Finding people able to commit to the hard work of caring for shelter cats—and showing communities that cats deserve love, not fear or hate. Our priorities are clear and there are so many ways that YOU could help.

🐱 CATS – Their care always comes first. Given a choice between a fancy coffee and a box of kitten food, we’re so grateful cat lovers choose to #feedthekitties.

🙋 PEOPLE – Over the years, we’ve made many improvements so visitors and volunteers can enjoy their time with the cats. We’d love for you to visit—maybe you’ll fall in love and adopt in person or become a virtual sponsor (“Pawrent”). CSR volunteer groups make a huge impact, too! If you are entrerpreneurial, there are many opportunities for you to create a cat cafe, expand the charity shop, get involved in online outreach and digital marketing.  Become a PAWTNER!

💰 MONEY – Our admin team works hard to track every sen (cent) to make sure the cats’ needs are met. In 2025, we’re focusing on growing donations and sales, while carefully managing rising costs. Monthly budget: RM 25,000 for operations, RM 5,000 for veterinary care. 

🌏 OUTREACH – With new tools like AI and social media, we’re finding creative ways to reach more supporters worldwide. Local events—like the PET EXPO, school visits, and CSR days—help us build a community of cat lovers face to face. Many hands make light work. Please join us!

🐈 Cat Carers – Morning and evening shifts cleaning, feeding, and monitoring cats’ health.

🐾 Cat Nurse – A few hours a day of medical care and special needs support. Fantastic experience for anyone interested in veterinary or medical careers.

🗂️ Office Admin – Help with bookkeeping, records, data entry.and social media.

😺 Receptionist / Tour Guide / Charity Shop Helper – Welcome visitors, give tours, and support sales onsite, online, and at events at venues.

We know we’re short-handed—even one or two more good people would be a godsend!

Job Requirements:✅ Must love cats✅ Friendly, hardworking, and dependable✅ Some English (other languages a bonus!)✅ No experience needed—we’ll train committed, reliable helpers
